14 Cute Christmas Sweaters for Women (That Aren’t Ugly)

I love an ugly sweater party as much as the next person (okay, I love getting invited to a holiday party regardless of the theme but I’ll admit, it is hard to get excited about purchasing a sweater I think is ugly). For the rest of of December, though, I want a Christmas sweater I feel great in. I want something I can wear to a holiday dinner, a school program or a Christmas party.
So this is my list of cute Christmas sweaters for women: soft fair isles, a little cashmere, and a few solid red and green knits that feel festive on their own. These are all things I’d put in my cart right now and buy for an event next month (how can we already say December is NEXT MONTH!).
One thing I keep in mind when I shop for these: I had my colors analyzed a couple of years ago and I’m a soft summer, so a bright Christmas red right up against my face is not my most flattering look. That’s why most of my picks have a cream or oat base with the red and green worked into the pattern.
If true red washes you out too, start with the fair isles that have the most cream in them, and leave the solid reds alone. You can always do a festive red pant or skirt instead.
The list runs from under $35 at Target to a $398 splurge from Tuckernuck, and my notes on every sweater are at the bottom of the post. If you’re shopping for a party instead, my SHEIN ugly Christmas sweaters are the ones that win the contest. They’re so bad… and probably the best reason to shop Shein this holiday season.
Cute Fair Isle Christmas Sweaters for Women
Fair isle is the easiest way to look festive but not too Christmassy and most of these will carry you right through January.
Classy Red and Green Christmas Sweaters for Women
If you’d rather skip the pattern, a solid red or deep green knit is Christmassy enough (maybe with a fun pair of Christmas earrings?), and you can easily wear if the rest of the year, too. Three are from Quince and I want all of them.
My Notes on Each Sweater
- Quince Mongolian Cashmere Fair Isle Christmas Sweater, $80. Mongolian cashmere in varsity red and ivory, and the most classic Christmas sweater on this list. If you’re on the fence about the brand, I’ve covered how it holds up in my Quince cashmere review. I would size up 2-3 sizes on this one for a cozy, oversized fit.
- Hanna Andersson Adult Holiday Sweater, $45 on sale (regularly $75). Festive Forest on Oat Heather, with multicolored trees around the yoke. Hanna is where we’ve bought our matching family Christmas pajamas for more than a decade, and my full Hanna Andersson review is here.
- Boden Edie Fair Isle Sweater, $160. Blue snowmen instead of red and green, so it works all winter and not only in December.
- Kiel James Patrick Northern Pine Sweater, $148. An 80% wool, 20% nylon blend with a ring of pine trees around the yoke and that cozy New England feel KJP is known for. They have a ton of other fun Christmas sweaters so click over to their site and look through the rest of them.
- Abercrombie Wool-Blend Roll Neck Crew Sweater, $95. A navy and cream fair isle with a rolled neck. It reads more ski lodge and winter than Christmas so you don’t need to pack this one away on December 26th.
- Levi’s Jolie Fair Isle Crewneck at Nordstrom Rack, $59.97. Deep red stripes with thin fair isle bands – I love the muted reds in this one that are festive without screaming Christmas.
- Target Reindeer Fair Isle Sweater, $31.99 (regularly $53.99). Deep green with white reindeer, sold as part of a family matching line if you want everyone in the same sweater for pictures. Like the Quince one, I’d size up 1-2 in this one for a cozier fit than on the model.
- ONLYSTORY Fair Isle Sweater on Amazon. If you want an amazon option, this one is cute and I like the cream instead of stark white with the green.
- Tuckernuck Saylor Multi Jem Sweater, $242. A rust red sweater with a cream fair isle yoke. How beautiful is this one??
- J.Crew Factory Fair Isle Cardigan, $86.50 on sale. I’m obsessed with the colors in this one. Its festive without being bright and very on trend for 2026. You could easily wear this all winter. I’d size up and layer it over a red shirt to make it a little more festive.
- Quince Mongolian Cashmere Cable Tee, $60. A short sleeve cable knit in varsity red. Perfect for us in southern california where Christmas weather is still mild. This is also great under a coat when you know some place is going to be overheated.
- Quince Mongolian Cashmere Shrunken Cable Crewneck, $89.90. Here’s the long sleeve version that has been on my Quince wishlist for months.
- Quince 100% Organic Cotton Cropped Cable Sweater, $49.90. Big Sur Green in organic cotton. Cotton is the better choice if you run warm or your Decembers are mild, and it’s easier to wash than cashmere. I’d go with this one over the cashmere if your Decembers are full of kid-centered activities.
- Tuckernuck Genevieve Cashmere Wool Blend Crewneck in Hunter Green, $398. The splurge of the whole list: a chunky crewneck in 65% wool and 35% cashmere, in a deep hunter green that is just stunning. If I could snap my fingers and have one sweater on this list, it would be this one.
What to Wear With a Christmas Sweater
A Christmas sweater does most of the work, so keep everything else simple: dark high-rise jeans, black or velvet trousers, with flats, loafers or ankle boots. If a sweater has wool in it and you’re sensitive to it, wear a thin long sleeve tee underneath. My Mott & Bow long sleeve tee has been my layering piece under sweaters for four years.
Christmas Sweater FAQ
An ugly Christmas sweater is a novelty piece made for parties, with tinsel, 3D ornaments, lights or a joke on the front. A cute Christmas sweater uses classic holiday details like fair isle, snowflakes, pine trees or a festive color, so you can wear it to dinner, work or family photos. For the party kind, see my SHEIN ugly Christmas sweaters.
A thin long sleeve tee or a fitted turtleneck keeps wool from itching and adds warmth. For a dressier look, a button-down with the collar showing over a crewneck looks polished.
Pick one with a cream, navy or deep green base, keep the pattern to the yoke or a small repeating motif, and pair it with tailored pieces like dark jeans, wool trousers or a midi skirt.
Most people start the day after Thanksgiving and wear them through New Year’s. Fair isles, snowflakes and solid red or green knits work all winter, so they don’t have to go back in the closet on December 26.
If you want a sweater that’s warm without bulk and soft against your skin, yes. The Quince fair isle on this list is Mongolian cashmere for $80, far less than most cashmere holiday sweaters, and I’ve shared how their cashmere wears in my Quince cashmere review.
Which Christmas Sweater Would I Buy First?
If I didn’t already have a red sweater, I’d buy the Quince Mongolian Cashmere Shrunken Cable Crewneck first. But the top of my list is a Kiel James Patrick sweater. I’ve never owned one, but years ago my sister and I stopped into their flagship store in Newport, Rhode Island and bought matching tops, and they were fantastic.
Their Christmas knits are giving Ralph Lauren holiday, with fair isle yokes, pine trees, tartan and a few Christmas cardigans, and you can see all of them in the Kiel James Patrick Holiday Shop.
If you shop their lineup, check the fabric before you order. Most of their women’s Christmas sweaters are 80% wool and 20% nylon, like the Northern Pine above, and a handful are 100% cotton if wool makes you itch. A few, including The McCallister and Santa’s New Sleigh, are mostly acrylic and nylon.
