Cute festive christmas pillows on a white couch in a living room.

Christmas pillows are the easiest holiday decor swap I know. A few new covers on the couch and the whole living room feels like December before you’ve hauled in a single bin from the garage. The hard part is finding ones that feel classic instead of cartoonish. I want something I’d see in a Pottery Barn catalogue, something that reads festive but isn’t a bright santa stitched on a pillow, you know?

So I went through Etsy, Target, Pottery Barn, West Elm, Quince, Walmart and Amazon and narrowed it down to 18: fifteen I’d put on a couch, plus three fun, colorful ones for the kids’ rooms or a playroom (I started with more than 30 and cut this list more than once). They range from $10 Amazon sets to Pottery Barn and West Elm, and nearly all of them stay in the same red, green, cream and burgundy family, so you can mix and match without the couch looking busy.

We have a white couch and all year long we have green and brown pillows so I was particularly looking for a some neutral pillows to keep the green + neutral colorscheme and still be festive. I LOVE the beaded Christmas tree pillow (pictured above) and the white with the 3d trees on it.

Christmas Pillows Under $25

If you want a festive couch without spending an arm and a leg, start here. Most of these are sets of two covers, so you’re paying closer to $5 to $10 per pillow. The two green tartans are the easiest way to get the classic plaid look for less and are giving Ralph Lauren Christmas in the best way. I think the little rulodph faux fur set is SO cute while still being mostly a neutral. Prices were under $25 when I put this list together, but they change often during the holidays.

Christmas Tree and Embroidered Pillows

If you want one pillow that says Christmas without shouting it, this is the section. The pearl embroidered tree on beige linen is the quietest of the bunch, and it comes in Euro sham sizes too. The vintage trees pillow has a cozy, old-fashioned feel, and the sherpa tree is shaped like an actual tree, which is a little whimsical in the best way. It think that set on the couch or on kids bed during December is the perfect touch.

Plaid and Tartan Christmas Pillows

A tartan pillow is the backbone of a classic Christmas couch, and it’s the pattern I’d buy first if you’re starting from scratch. The Studio McGee ruffle pillow from Target is oversized at 24 inches, so it works as the big anchor pillow at each end, and the Pottery Barn tartan lumbar is the splurge that pulls it all together. Pick your favorite one of these as the base for your classic Christmas couch.

Bow, Neutral and Lumbar Christmas Pillows

Bows are everywhere this year (we’re seeing so many bow options in Christmas pajamas) and they’re a fun, playful take on holiday decor. I love the deep burgundy of the Studio McGee lumbar pillow (and also the bow pillow in the Kid section below this one)> The West Elm garland cover and the ivory block print from Quince lean softer and more neutral, which helps break up all that plaid, and the green knit scalloped lumbar adds texture. The Quince one you could just use year round on your couch and is a great option if you want to spend money on something you’ll use beyond December.

Fun, Colorful Christmas Pillows for the Kids’ Rooms

With four kids at home, I wanted a few picks that are just plain fun. These are brighter and more playful than the rest of the list, so they’re perfect for a bedroom, a playroom or a reading corner. If you’re decorating the kids’ spaces, they pair nicely with matching family Christmas pajamas for Christmas morning photos.

How to Style Christmas Pillows on a Couch

Here are three easy combinations using pillows from this list. Each one sticks to a tight color palette and mixes one big pattern, one smaller detail and one lumbar.

The Classic Tartan Couch

Put the Studio McGee tartan ruffle pillow at each end, the pearl embroidered tree in front of each one, and the Pottery Barn tartan lumbar in the middle. It’s the traditional red-and-green look, softened by the cream linen of the tree pillows.

The Soft Neutral Couch

Start with the ivory Quince block print at each end, add the pearl embroidered tree and the sherpa tree in front, and finish with the green knit scalloped lumbar. Keeping the block print as the only pattern and letting the other three pillows bring texture instead is what keeps this one calm. This is the one for a white or cream sofa if you want Christmas without a lot of red.

The Budget Couch

The Amazon green tartan set, the faux fur tree covers and the Amazon tartan lumbar give you five covers for around $30 at the time I’m writing this. Add the Walmart reindeer covers if you have a sectional to fill.

What to Look for in Christmas Throw Pillows

Holiday pillows only come out for a few weeks a year, so it’s worth thinking about storage and versatility before you buy.

Covers vs. full pillows: Most of the Etsy and Amazon picks here are covers only. Covers take up almost no room in your holiday bins, so buy good inserts once and swap the covers each season. Check every listing to see whether an insert is included.

Inserts: A down or down-alternative insert one size larger than the cover (a 22″ insert in a 20″ cover) gives you that full, plump look instead of a sad, flat pillow.

Fabric: Velvet, wool-look tartans, linen and faux fur photograph richer than thin printed polyester. If you have little ones, look for covers with a zipper that can go in the washing machine.

Color palette: Pick two or three colors and vary the textures and patterns within them. Red, green and cream is the classic combination, and swapping red for burgundy reads a little more grown-up.

Size mix: On a standard sofa, a 22″ or 24″ pillow at each end, a 20″ in front of each and one lumbar in the middle looks layered without crowding the seat.

Timing: Many Etsy shops make covers to order, so order those first if you want them on the couch by Thanksgiving weekend.

So, Where Should You Start?

If you’re building a Christmas couch from scratch, start with one tartan, one embroidered or tree pillow and one lumbar, and stick to the same color family. That combination works on a white, cream, gray or leather sofa, and it leaves room to add a fun one later. If you have a colored couch, you can layer the different neutral Christmas pillows and still get a festive feel without too many competing colors.

Christmas Pillows FAQ

How many Christmas pillows should I put on a couch?

For a standard three-seat sofa, four or five is plenty: two larger square pillows at each end plus a lumbar in the middle. A sectional can handle six or seven.

Are Christmas pillow covers better than full pillows?

For most people, yes. Covers are cheaper, and they store flat, so you can keep a few seasonal sets and reuse the same inserts all year.

Where can I buy cute Christmas pillows?

Etsy is the best place for handmade and embroidered covers, Target’s Studio McGee and Hearth & Hand lines are great for trend-forward pieces, Pottery Barn and West Elm are the splurge, and Amazon has inexpensive sets of two. For more designer looks for less, see my Quince dupes list.

How do I store Christmas pillows?

Take the covers off, wash them if needed, and fold them flat in a labeled bin with your other decor. Keep the inserts in use year round, or vacuum-seal extra inserts to save space.

What colors go with a Christmas couch?

Red, green and cream are the classic combination. Burgundy, forest green and ivory feel more modern, and a single bright pillow is an easy way to make a kids’ room feel festive.
