Fun story – my husband and I actually met at an ugly sweater party in college. I raided my roommate’s closet for a sweater with a Christmas tree that actually lit up when you turned the switch (it had a battery pack hidden somewhere inside it).
I’ve rounded up the best sweaters from Shein for your next ugly sweater party (the list might make you want to host one). Some of them are just hideous, some of them are on the tame side, and some of them are a little absurd.
All of these sweaters are under $30 with most of them closer to $20.
I first wrote this list in 2021, and almost all of those sweaters are long gone from SHEIN. So for the 2026 party season I rebuilt it with the nine ugly Christmas sweaters sitting in my SHEIN cart right now, sorted from the full-on contest winners down to the ones you could wear all of December.

Tinsel Christmas Tree Sweater
Best for: winning the ugliest sweater contest
The whole sweater is a Christmas tree, with actual tinsel garland and little bows and baubles attached, so it’s 3D instead of just printed on. This is the one I’d grab if there’s a prize on the line. It’s the priciest sweater in my cart, but it was marked QuickShip, which helps if the party is this weekend.
Angry Gingerbread Man Sweater
Best for: a sweater that gets a reaction
A giant gingerbread man with a furious frosting face and three gumdrop buttons, on a red and white Christmas knit pattern. Up close it’s printed to look like a chunky 3D sweater rather than real appliqué, but from across the room nobody will know. SHEIN lists it at $66.70 and it was marked down to about $25 when I checked, so don’t pay full price.
Pink Santa and Christmas Tree Sweater
Best for: the cheapest ugly sweater on the list
Pink trees, rows of Santas, presents and candy canes all over a bright blue background. It’s from SHEIN’s own LUNE line and the pattern is printed to look puffy, so it’s more ugly than cozy. Under $8 for a sweater you’ll pull out once a year is hard to beat.
Funny Christmas Sweaters That Are Still Cute
These land in the middle: clearly a Christmas sweater, clearly a little silly, but you won’t feel like you’re wearing a costume.
Christmas Frog Sweater
Best for: anyone who likes their ugly sweater a little weird
A row of frogs on a dark green knit, dressed up as Santa, a Christmas tree and a snowman. It’s absurd in the best way, which is the whole point of an ugly sweater party. At about $10 it’s the second cheapest sweater in my cart.
Black Cat in an Ugly Sweater
Best for: cat people
A grumpy black cat wearing its own ugly Christmas sweater, on a green crewneck. A sweater on a sweater should count double at any ugly sweater party. It’s a lightweight, stretchy knit (polyester with a little elastane), so think warm top more than chunky sweater.
Teddy Bear Christmas Sweater
Best for: festive more than ugly
A teddy bear in a tiny Fair Isle sweater on a wine red knit. This is on the cute end of the scale, the kind of sweater that also works for a family party or Christmas Eve. The bear is a jacquard knit, so it’s knit into the sweater instead of printed on top.

If you’d rather not be the loudest person at the party, these still fit the theme and you’ll keep reaching for them long after it’s over.

Best for: a subtle Christmas sweater
A brown sweater with simple antlers and a red nose. That’s it, and that’s why I like it. It reads festive without trying too hard, and you could wear it with jeans every weekend in December.
Red and Green Checkered Sweater
Best for: a slouchy sweater you’ll wear past the party
Big red and green checks in a slouchy, oversized fit. It isn’t technically an ugly sweater, but in Christmas colors it fits right in, and you might find you grab it all winter to lounge around in at home with leggings.

Best for: couples and matching photos

How to Make a SHEIN Sweater Even Uglier
My favorite ugly sweater ever was the one that lit up, and you can get close to that with a cheap sweater and a few things from the craft aisle:
- Safety pin battery string lights around the neckline or the tree (tuck the battery pack in a pocket or clip it inside the hem).
- Hot glue or pin on mini ornaments, jingle bells or pom poms.
- Wrap tinsel garland around the waist like a belt.
- Add a Santa hat, reindeer antlers or a headband with bells to finish it off.
Ugly Sweater Party Ideas (If This Makes You Want to Host One)
If the list did its job and you’re now planning your own ugly sweater party, here are a few easy ideas:
