The 5 People You Spend the Most Time With

These pictures showed up in my inbox just about the time I was reading this old article online. Jim Robin claims that “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”  Well, for the past two years in my life, you’re staring at the top three.

The people you surround yourself with have an incredible ability to impact not only what you do, but how you think, what you focus on, and what your goals. are. You tend to start seeing yourself the way that these people see you and valuing the things they value. So ask yourself, do they build you up? Do they encourage you to be who you want to become? Are they people you aspire to be like?

I hope the answer is yes,. If not, make time for new people. There are some things we cannot choose in life, but when we can choose something as important as who we become, I recommend taking that seriously. Of course, you have the power to rise above your situation and never need to be limited by the opinions and actions of others, but that doesn’t mean you can escape their influence completely.

Living with Carly and Ryan taught me to value cleanliness a little bit more, reminded me to make time relationships, and encouraged me to put away technology.  They introduced to me lemon desserts, spicy anything, and so many games. They are incredible examples of putting their marriage first and how to have lots of fun when all four of us should be sleeping (usually with class looming just hours away). We sure do miss these two.
side note: these pictures were taken in the five minutes I had to be in the car headed to the airport that time no one believed I was over 18 (I guess it would be good if I forgot my ID, right?).
Do you buy it? Do you think we really are the average of the 5 people we spend the most time with?

  1. I agree – Ryan and Carly inspire me to be beter too! They always put their marriage first and they're so good at being clean and keeping the bigger perspective in mind.
