We’ve been in our apartment for about a year and a half and it was time to do a little bedding refresh and put some finishing touches on our bedroom. We’ve had the same bedding since we moved into our home in Ohio (four and a half years ago?) and we still hadn’t hang a single thing on our walls here.
Whether you’re looking to refresh your guest room for holiday visitors or add an extra layer of cozy to your room as the weather gets colder, keep reading for tips on giving your bedding a winter refresh.
When Kohl’s reached out about updating our bedding for the season, I was in! Right now, through November 18th, Kohls is having a big sale on lots of our favorite home brands and you can check it all out here.
Winter Bedding Update
Start with great neutrals:
Having good quality neutral bedding makes it easy to transition your bedroom from season to season and shake things up with small accent pieces.
I’ve loved having all white bedding for the last few years because a few new throw pillows could change the whole look of the room. Four years into this bedding though, and it was time for an update.
I swapped out my white quilt for the pucker striped bedding set from The Big One at Kohl’s because I loved the texture the striped detail adds to the bed.
Pay attention to function:
It’s easy to get caught up in the fun of picking colors + blankets, but focus on the pieces that effect your quality of sleep. What parts of the bedding actually stay when you’re in bed for the night?
Sheets and sleep pillows.
When we updated our white quilt we also went ahead and bought some new sheets (The Big One brand, too). For the holidays there were so many fun flannel options on Kohls.com but I eventually settled on some good white jersey sheets. On the bed, they feel like falling asleep in your favorite tee shirt (and they come in a million different colors). Awesome, right?
We also took our pillow game up a notch and snagged these memory foam pillows from Serta, They feel like a dream (or like a long, deep, dreamless sleep….whichever sounds more appealing). You can be sure this was the bedding update that Ben was most excited about.
Layer on textures:
Winter is all about chunky knits, cozy flannels, and soft velvets. You can layer on color in deep jewel tones with accent pillows or keep the look neutral and focus only on texture. Keeping it neutral and sticking with texture is also a great choice if coming up with color schemes isn’t your thing or you already have strong colors happening in the room.
When picking pillows it’s easy to go overboard. You can’t go wrong with Euro shams, sleeping pillows, and a lumbar pillow. You can add in standard shams or another throw pillow if you want, just be sure to keep the color palette cohesive and pillows getting smaller as you move toward the middle of the bed.
Add cozy pieces:
My bed is often an afternoon retreat when the kids are napping/having quiet time and I love having cozy blankets folded across the bottom for curling up with a book (or to take a nap myself).
We added this throw from Cuddl Duds to our bed and it has the same extra soft + cozy feel their clothes are known for. You’ll want to curl up and read all afternoon in this and it comes in a few different colors.
Consider layering on a chunky knit throw for texture (I want one of these in every room now!).
Finishing up our bedroom:
I put a few extra final touches on our bedroom at the same time as updating our bedroom so the room finally feels finished. We hung 24” x 36” engineering prints of some photos we had taken of just me and Ben last year (step-by-step instructions on how to print your own engineering prints here). I love having something other than a bare wall across from our bed and that I’m reminded of the sweet parts of our marriage everytime I walk into our bedroom.
I also decluttered nightstands and added some white pumpkins for fall decor. I picked up a great fall candle, too (but it must have been sitting in the kitchen for these pictures…it’s too good to keep in only one room).
Now I need your help!
Which bedding setup do you like better? I’ve followed these steps and come up with two different bedding combos using the great neutral bedding I got from Kohl’s as the base. Which should I go with?
Do you like the pop of orange or should I stick with the neutrals?
