Just dropping in for a quick ‘hi’ from Utah! We’ve been three days and I can already tell this trip is going to be great for us, and not just in the “lots of fun and relaxing” kind of way.
In a humanities course I’m taking I recently learned a bit about leisure. Did you know one hundred years ago leisure time wasn’t meant to be free time, time to veg, or do nothing? Leisure specifically referred to time to pursue interests outside of work. It mean studying history or working on painting for an engineer and it meant keeping up with the latest scientific discovery for the painter. It was all about being holistic in your pursuit of knowledge.
In this transient stage of life this past little bit my leisure activities, my creative outlets, became my primary focus (and income). The problem is that I didn’t find new leisure activities to replace them and its left me feeling unbalanced, a tiny bit unmotivated, and a little burnt out.
I’m so grateful for a time to refocus and be motivated by some wonderful people (and a wonderful campus) here in Utah. Reconnecting with old friends who inspire by their work ethic and dedication are exactly what I needed – that and maybe some time unplugged in the mountains 🙂
P.S. You can keep up with some of our time here in Utah on Instagram (@bellatheblog)
