So I got married at 20, seven years below the national average.
Whenever you get married, its an adjustment – but it doesn’t have to be a hard one.
The best advice anyone gave me about getting married is this:
True story. But instead of rambling on another dissertation of my views on marriage, today I have another Elizabeth to do it for me. Elizabeth (can I tell you how WEIRD it is to type that name with a z?) writes over at The Bradleys about life, adventure, and unschooling (homeschooling) her cute four year old. My guess is she has lived in more countries than you have been too – so check out her blog after reading her thoughts on marriage:
Being married over 6 years has taught us a lot about the changes that occur
in a relationship, the ups and downs as well as time limits when one has kids.
It takes an effort to make time to spend with each other and effort to not just
have a relationship as mutual parents; in other words, we
need to keep dating our spouses after we say ‘I do’ and make spending time
together a priority.
My husband and I are deeply in love with eachother, and I am so blessed to have him!
The only problem is that we haven’t had a date night in a long, long time.
We never found someone to babysit and frankly just didn’t make it a
priority. Busy with work, parenthood, homeschooling, starting a family business
has made us exhausted and craving a good night’s sleep.
This coming year, we have a little plan: to make dating eachother a weekly priority
and to go out of our way to make sure we get one night a week together, whether it be
merely watching a movie when Kaya is asleep or going on a weekend gettaway.
I get asked often by singles of all ages my advice to newlyweds and I always say
‘Marry the right person, and truly commit to eachother.’
That’s what is needed and what is lacking in our world.
When we do make such a commitment we need to renew it often, to remind
ourselves of the importance of a life spent with someone we love.
I am so grateful I went against the grain and married young.
And I can’t wait to get a weekly reminder of just how much I love spending time
