3 Beauty Habits to Start in Your 20s

After hanging out (and being photographed next to) my sweet younger sister all summer, I’ve had anti-aging and skin on my mind. Heading into my late twenties, this last year I’ve started investing more in serums and masks, but being reminded, close up, of what my skin looked like 8 years ago, is some serious motivation.
Here are three things to start doing in your twenties to optimize your skin for the next few decades:
Feed Your Skin from the Inside Out
Start considering how your skin is effected by various foods you eat and make sure that you’re giving it the nutrients it needs to keep your face clear and glowing. Look for things with omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, and zinc.
Are you concerned you’re not giving your skin the nutrients it deserves? I tried my first set of skincare supplements a few years ago and appreciated how easy it was to add another step to my skincare routine (that happened in the morning, with breakfast, and not at the end of a long day while getting ready for bed).
With mildly sensitive skin, I’m wary of harsh skincare changes and often see breakouts when I initially switch to new products (even if my skin really likes them in the long run). I love that with beauty supplements, even if it takes a few weeks for me to notice differences, my skin doesn’t get irritated. I also love that in addition to improving your skin, supplements are giving your body the nutrients it needs to function well, so you’re also improving your overall health. With supplements, you can fundamentally improve the root causes of skin problems, for the long run.

Make Sunscreen a habit
With fear of sounding like a broken record (because EVERY skin care thing I read talks about sunscreen), this is the most important anti-aging skin care step. It can be as simple as finding a great SPF with sunscreen in it (I talked about my favorite one here) but I also like to make sure I have something a little bit stronger for days I am going to be spending more time outdoors, especially in the summer.
Go Beyond Your Face
Think of what percent of your beauty routine is dedicated to your face. Did you konw that dermatologits think of the face, neck, and decolletage as a single skincare unit? We should too.

Whatever serum, cream, mask, or sunscreen you’re applying, be sure to extend it down past your throat.
Bonus things I’m doing or considering:
- investing in a retinol
- using antioxidant serum each morning, especially now that we live in a city with pollution
- exfoliate 1-2 times per week (I used to exclusively use an exfoliating cleanser and then I dropped exfoliating almost completely – working on finding that balance this year!)
